Jennifer Baker is an “American” artist who divides her life between Colorado’s Rocky Mountains and the foothills of the Alps in Northern Italy. I was able to meet Jennifer and see her work when she was living in the valleys near Brescia and now, after a decade, I have the pleasure of presenting her first exhibition in Italy at Centro Arte Lupier.

When you walk into Jennifer’s studio you are enveloped in an artistic world permeated by vitality and passion, dominated by light opening up in an enthralling hymn to beauty. Jennifer’s paintings are the fruit of second generation Abstract Expressionism – having worked and studied with the artists Jane Rosen, Don Eddy, Jan Groth, and Jack Youngerman, who were the major exponents of AbEx canons at the time, and who had a profound and lasting influence on her practice. From them she learned how to take possession of space using the timeless expression of color to explore the human soul and the natural world.
  
She is fascinated by the natural and human landscapes that inspire her, and her canvases are a means of defense for land and natural spaces against the threat of devastation and degradation.

Though her feminine psyche may appear as traditional or bound to classical canons, her artistic practice is extremely complex and subtle, and markedly intellectual, an apparent translation of  the rarefied atmosphere of Symbolism. Her brush vibrates over the surface, tracing the void in the blanks of the canvas as if she has somehow managed to catch the wind there. A process of overlapping and layering serves to make light while unveiling shapes formed by light - here painting becomes vision and the vision a dream.

The paintings shown at Centro Arte LuPier takes us into an inanimate world where we get a glimpse of the unconscious: absences, which suddenly re-emerge. Jennifer works slowly, digging deep down inside herself, bringing to the surface fragments of consciousness.

The artist looks at  the world but she does not want to repeat (represent) it, asking the viewer to look for its essence, purify the images, and move into and through its empty spaces, which lead to their interpretation, as if a dream. The entire canvas is at the same time an actor and interpreter of the work, spaces are infinite and deep while diffused light spreads, dissolving and erasing objects and forms, giving way to the uniform and vibrant luminosity of the painting. Perspective melds into a vision of juxtaposed pure colors to create an unreal, oneiric depth, while at the same time being dynamic and vivid.

Jennifer entitled this exhibition “LUCE” (Light), which is inarguably the most appropriate title imaginable. Light is the essential element, illuminating each painting and transforming the chromatic scale into a kaleidoscope of form and color, as if to portray the flux and infinite energy present in nature. The artist looks at the surrounding reality with a new and contemporary sensibility, showing the viewer her own different, unique, and inimitable vision of the world, through a deeply moving experience.

Jennifer Baker è l’artista ‘americana’ che divide la sua vita tra le Montagne Rocciose del Colorado e le Prealpi del nord Italia. E’ proprio in occasione di un suo soggiorno nelle valli del bresciano che ho avuto modo di conoscere Jennifer e la sua arte. Oggi a distanza di oltre un decennio ho il piacere di presentare la sua prima mostra in Italia al Centro Arte Lupier.

Quando entri nello studio della Baker ti immergi in un approccio a tutto campo del suo mondo artistico vitale ed emozionale, dominato da teoremi di luce che aprono alla bellezza estetica e all’esaltazione di una lirica che rapisce.

Jennifer Baker è figlia dell’espressionismo americano (secondo periodo) di cui ha appreso i canoni frequentando artisti quali Jane Rosen, Don Eddy, Jan Groth e Jack Youngerman, tra le massime espressioni artistiche di quegli anni con cui lei ha vissuto e collaborato.  Dai Maestri apprende il possesso dello spazio, la perlustrazione con i mezzi antichi del colore dell’animo umano e del mondo naturale.

Jennifer è affascinata dai paesaggi naturali e umani che la ispirano e sulle sue tele diventano mezzi di difesa del territorio e del paesaggio dal rischio delle devastazioni e del degrado.

Se la sua psicologia, come donna, appare semplice e legata ai buoni sentimenti e alle tradizioni, la sua ricerca artistica è difficile e sottile ed è fortemente intellettuale. Essa appare una traduzione del simbolismo e delle sue rarefatte atmosfere, il pennello vibra. La Baker riesce perfino a ‘impigliare’ sulla tela il vento lasciando su essa il vuoto. Sovrapposizioni e strati successivi servono ad evidenziare la luce, dentro la quale si riconoscono le forme che si intuiscono attraverso la luce, dentro la luce stessa. L’opera diventa così visione e la visione sogno.

Jennifer Baker nelle opere che propone in mostra al Centro Arte LuPier rimanda a un mondo inanimato su cui affaccia l’inconscio: assenze che improvvisamente riemergono.  Così Jennifer lavora lentamente, scava dentro di sé per portare alla luce frammenti della coscienza.  

L’artista sa guardare il mondo, ma non vuole ripeterlo, chiede al fruitore di ricercare le essenze, purificare le immagini, avanzare negli spazi vuoti puntando all’interpretazione del sogno. Tutta la tela è attrice e interprete dell’opera, gli spazi diventano infiniti e profondi, mentre la luce tende a diffondersi e a farsi più vibrante sfumando e svanendo oggetti e forme perché ciò che conta è la vibrazione luminosa, uniformemente distribuita in ogni parte dell’opera. La prospettiva sembra così scomparire in una visione di colori puri sovrapposti, che creano uno spessore irreale, estremamente dinamico e vivace.

Jennifer Baker ha voluto intitolare questa mostra ‘LUCE’ e si può affermare senza alcun dubbio quanto esso risulti appropriato e quanto la luce sia proprio l’elemento essenziale che illumina ogni quadro trasfigurando i cromatismi dell’opera in un caleidoscopio di forme e colori, come a  ritrarre il continuo movimento e l’infinita energia presenti nella natura.

Jennifer rivisita la realtà che la circonda attraverso una nuova sensibilità contemporanea restituendo al fruitore la sua visione del mondo, diversa, unica e inimitabile, sicuramente capace di emozionare.
