I was born and raised in Florida, and picked up my first paint brush too early to remember. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, studying on a full tuition scholarship under renowned artists including Jane Rosen, Don Eddy, Jan Groth and Jack Youngerman.
My artistic process and production are my own language for communicating and communing with the natural world as a human being. The common thread that underlies all of my work is a desire and intention to stop, stand still, find moments for the contemplation and interpretation of the environment that surrounds us all, all of the time, the pulse of life and natural becoming that never stops, never quiets, never remains the same. Making sense of my own place on this planet, as part of the living breathing biosphere that I am a part of… that is why I paint. The truth is that I find the natural world enthrallingly, overwhelmingly captivating, and beautiful. My artistic practice interprets that beauty, power, and unpredictable force. My work beckons the person viewing it to look outward while at the same time looking inward, experiencing the power and forces of nature that run through us all at our core.
My paintings are an ode to life, to becoming, and to majesty. They are a reminder to take a moment to release the trappings of the mundane, to look up, down, far, and close. To be still.
My work is the result of meditation, intuition, and sometimes a real or perceived memory. A walk in the rain. The sky at dusk. The sunrise. The lotus flowers on the lake. The flaming sun. Koi slow-dancing in the pond. When I walk into my studio, I always feel that thrill. I am coming home. I am understood. I am in my native country.
Oil paint has forever been my preferred medium. Oils are alive, organic, and unpredictable. They mutate and transform during their drying process, and are malleable and willing to change along with me. Canvas is my preferred support, for its durability and bounce back from my brush or hand as I work, for its tooth and organic surface.
I never use black in any of my paintings, instead preferring chromatic grays.
My technique is immediate and instinctive. I build my paintings in layers, often spontaneously covering underpaintings. My canvases convey an inclination towards light and space and expressive color, and change in appearance and mood depending on the time of day, the weather, and the season. My work is beckoning, instantaneous, and sensual. My perspective is tactile and sensorial. I create spaces that are sometimes dreamlike and sometimes reminiscent of the natural world.
My paintings have been exhibited in Italy, New York City, New Mexico, Colorado, and Greece, and are part of many private collections in the United States and Italy. I was recently awarded as a finalist at the 2021 Biennale di Genova.
Art is for living.
